Getting to know.......

The more I know about the internet, the more I become interactive with our society. Today, I learned how to use I-tunes, importing CD to my I-tunes, finding music from the web, uploading files to my homepage, and creating my music page. I also learned differences between AIFF and MP3 and how to convert each other. Before I learned those information, I did not know how to save my favorite music in my computer. Using I-pod was not comfortable for me even though I was eager to keep up with the recent technology.

I am getting comfortable using my computer, internet vocabularies, and downloading softwares which makes me feel connected with our society. I am so glad that I am given this class as a course of my teaching preparation. Indeed, “knowledge is power.” Nevertheless, I also feel technology may cause a gap between generations, cultures and socio-economic satues. Maybe this will be an education’s role so that children can have opportunities to be given an access to technology in edcation so that none of them could not feel isolated.

Evolution of technology

Apart from what I learned today, such as blogging, modifying images through photoshop, and some more internet vocabularies, I was interested in Dr. Gilbert’s insight on evolution of technology. As Dr. Gilbert mentioned, I also agree that we are living in the world surrounded by inventions that were created for human needs. Dr. Gilbert commented that early version of computer was created similar to human’s figure. He stated the early version of computer was composed of the binary system using only ‘0’ and ‘1’ was likely to reflect human body: two eyes, two ears, two legs, two arms, two sides of brain, right and left, up and down, and front and back. How fascinating it is!

This encouraged me to think about our life cycle as well as philosophy: birth and death, happiness and sadness, and yin and yang. Everything seems to have its polarities. However, I think these conceptual ideas should be understood in the dynamic flow. In other words, although one can be distinguished from the other, I believe that we have to know one can change into the other dependent on a situation which makes endless cycles like yin-yang.

Technology has been developing as people update what they need in this century. Consequently computer is no more understood in a form of binary system, rather it shows an interactive process which connects the world even closer. The World Wide Web brings us to everywhere so that we can access to anywhere. From this tech-evolution, we can see various perspectives from others, share ideas with others and engage actively with others. I feel this may opens our perceptions from finding one answer (yes or no like a binary system) to accepting various perspectives (randomly access though hyperlink). This means there is no right answer and everything can be seen dependent upon a situation.

On one hand, the class was helpful for me to understand that technology is not so remote from our life but it is a tool that we can facilitate world wide relationship interactively. This notion gave me a chance to be familiar with technology. On the other hand, I believe that technology cannot be replaced by human resources ever. Technology should be a tool for us to live the world conveniently and we should not be overthrown by technology.

Files, Folders and Blog

Today, I learned how to make files and folders in my homepage. I was totally lost when Dr. Gilbert taught us creating an images file. Later I realized that I create the images file under folders and that is why I could not follow the instruction for a while. From this experience, I learned that one small mistake makes a huge problem especially in technology. I have to be more careful when I am given the instruction. And of course, practice many times!!!

After learning how to link files in a folder, we learned to create our personal blogs, which usually people understand as my space. It was fascinating to create my webpage that connects people all over the world. There were several things I had to download in order to utilize creating things in my blog and NYU homepage. Honestly speaking, I was so scared to download due to viruses. That is one reason why my computer is so boring. After I download adobe photoshop elements, 4.0, Firefox, and yahoo widgets, I was so excited that I have lots of tools to create many things in my computer.

I only had two classes so far, but I feel like I learned a lot already. I am looking forward to the next class!!
